Who We Are

Since 2010, the Grassroot Network for Health and Sustainable Development (GNHSD) has been working towards advancing the lives of children and vulnerable women in Mumias West Sub-County, Bungasi area. For over a decade, we have

developed a 100% community-led approach that places decision-making power directly in the hands of those most affected by poor health and poverty.

Since 2010, we have empowered over 20000 families in the four wards within Mumias Subcounty through child welfare activities, women's economic empowerment, and a cost-effective community village savings and loans approach.

Projects

We have two main project thematic areas that include;

Child Welfare project

About 1.5 million infants are born every year in Kenya, contributing to a significant number of children under the age of 5, totaling over 7 million, which represents 13

percent of the total population. This demographic reality underscores the critical importance of childcare in Kenya’s societal development. Child welfare and women’s

economic empowerment are closely linked, each directly influencing the other.

Our child welfare approach focuses on child nutrition, healthcare, ECDE learning promotion, prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT), and oral health

to ensure children grow up in healthy, supportive environments. Through PMTCT activities, HIV-positive adolescents and young mothers are linked to treatment, care, and support to reduce the risk of HIV transmission to their babies and improve maternal and child well-being.

Women Economic Empowerment Project

The Grassroot Network for Health and Sustainable Development is committed to empowering vulnerable young mothers who face barriers to skills development and

socioeconomic opportunities. We support young women who struggle to meet their basic needs and those of their children by promoting child welfare, health, economic

empowerment, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. We recognize that childcare and women’s economic empowerment are closely connected. When women have

access to reliable, affordable, and quality childcare, they are better able to engage in income-generating activities, pursue education, and participate in skills training

without caregiving responsibilities limiting them. This contributes to greater economic independence and improved quality of life.

Sustainable agriculture is essential for ensuring food security, reducing poverty, and protecting the environment. Through our sustainable agriculture activities, we aim to empower more young women to produce nutritious food in ways that are environmentally responsible, economically viable, and sustainable for their households and communities.
